This week’s Toking Tunes playlist features the infectious rhythms of early drum and bass. ‘Forbidden Fruit’ highlights tracks from seminal releases New Forms by Roni Size, Two Pages by 4hero, and more.

The opening track off of the 4hero record ‘Loveless’ features American spoken-word artist Ursula Rucker, whose warm voice and particular rhythms compliment 4hero’s catchy breakbeats perfectly.

Goldie’s ‘Kemistry’ from 1995’s Timeless features vocals by Diane Charlemagne. The song pays tribute to Kemistry — a key figure in the the birth of drum and bass who helped pave the way for female DJs in dance music.

Also featured are tracks from iconic MC Stevie Hyper D, experimentalist Squarepusher, and The Ganja Kru, whose sentiments over at Ganja Records are appreciated here at Word on the Tree.

Happy toking!
