Opening this week’s playlist is a taste of the impressionist sounds of Claude Debussy, in the colorful ‘L’isle joyeuse,’ or ‘The Joyful Island.’ The vivid compositional style of Debussy seems well suited to toking — as evidenced by his inclusion (along with Giacomo Puccini) into the programs for the Colorado Symphony Orchestra’s “Classically Cannabis” fundraisers.
Also included is Janine Jansen’s intricate interpretation of Ralph Vaughan Williams ‘The Lark Ascending.’ Jansen’s warbles are well accompanied by the warm, melting tones from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in this excellent rendition.
Strings feature prominently this week, as they’re central in Puccini’s melancholy ‘Crisantemi,’ and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s grand ‘Pezzo in Forma di Sonatina’ from Serenade for Strings in C Major, Op. 48.
Many of these pieces are movements taken from larger works. If you enjoy lighting up to them, it’s more than worth hearing them in full.
